Common Ground
"I thought that most homeless women were into drugs or prostitution," Anita begins. "But since I've been at Joshua, I've gotten to know other women who are a lot like me." She explains, "I never thought I'd be homeless. Sometimes there are just certain circumstances that you can't change, and that's what happens."
Many of Anita's difficulties started with the death of her son. "I never dreamed of losing a child," she remembers. "I just couldn't function. People told me I had to get over it, but I couldn't. I stopped going out and even stopped going to church because I didn't want to face people anymore. They didn't understand."
The depression continued. Eventually, Anita lost her job and her home. Then, last October she came to the Joshua Center. It proved to be a turning point in her life.
"Being here changed my life. It changed my way of thinking," Anita says. She adds, "I came here when I was finished running from my problems." She is thankful for the support she's received while at Joshua, observing, "God surrounded me with a lot of good people. I've made some really strong friendships with a few of the homeless ladies here." She also appreciates the staff, saying, "They treat us with respect despite our situations."
Anita has finished some employment training courses and is currently taking computer classes. "I'm just working on getting my life back together. I have a fifteen year-old son, and I don't want the street life to get him. He is my motivation for doing this."
