God, "The Ultimate Arranger"
In his wonderful study guide, Experiencing God, Henry Blackaby made a recommendation that has been often quoted, "If you want to experience God, discover where He is working and go there." It didn't take Breakthrough long to discover that God had been working in East Garfield Park long before we joined the community.

We kept hearing about a woman we "needed to meet" by the name of Nettie Bailey. Nettie has been serving the community and Jesus by tutoring children for years just a few blocks from Breakthrough's Joshua Center. She is a true hero who has been featured twice by Harry Porterfield on ABC Channel 7 as "Someone You Should Know." When I met her a few months ago, I knew immediately that I had met a woman who knew Jesus intimately and I "experienced God." She glowed in her living room hospital bed. Bent with arthritis and clearly in pain, she spoke of the lessons she was still learning and how God, in her words, "the Ultimate Arranger," was working everything together for her good.

We are proud to honor Mrs. Bailey by naming our academic program after her. We pray for the grace to be able to continue her work with as much humility and love.

Thanks to Brady Gott, a summer intern and student at Moody Bible Institute. Brady assisted day staff in our Men's Services Program, including gathering information from new homeless guests, introducing them to our program, and leading devotions. "Brady was a natural and a great help to our staff," says Day Services Director, Judy Cuchetto.

Mrs. Nettie Bailey will be honored on Saturday, August 27th.
The Nettie Bailey Student Achievement Program

Long before Breakthrough Urban Ministries started a program for youth in East Garfield Park, a community resident, Mrs. Nettie Bailey put her faith and ideas into action.

Breakthrough has chosen to name our existing After-School Program after Mrs. Bailey because of her commitment to help her neighbors realize their full potential. This extraordinary woman exemplifies Breakthrough's philosophy of compassion, leadership and faith.

Mrs. Bailey was a teacher and assistant principal at Chicago's Jacob Beidler Elementary School for almost 25 years, and she earned the respect of her students and colleagues. "Before I ever began teaching I asked the Lord if I could teach where I live because I wanted to make a difference in the community," says Nettie.

Even in retirement, Mrs. Bailey has tutored many children in her neighborhood, sometimes from her hospital bed in her living room. She also helps neighbors work on their resumes. Besides her roles as a teacher, mother, grandmother, mentor and author, Mrs. Bailey is a community activist and Garfield Park Conservatory board member.

Community residents know that Mrs. Bailey's house is a refuge. It’s common to see her porch filled with people laughing, talking and enjoying each other’s company. Mrs. Bailey and her late husband offered “church school” sessions in their home for many years.

By her own example, friends and family see the profound physical, emotional and mental strength that comes through her relationship with God. Please join us on Saturday, August 27th as we celebrate and honor Mrs. Bailey. For more information or to RSVP click here.

Judy Cuchetto is the Day Services Director of Breakthrough's Men's Services program. She lives in Villa Park and attends Trinity Lutheran Church in Lombard.
Describe what you do at Breakthrough.
I’m involved in our support services for homeless men, including one-on-one meetings with each guest. My role at Breakthrough is very challenging, in a positive sense. Most of all, I enjoy the personal contact with guests. The freedom we have here to counsel "from the cross", so to speak, has a great impact on changing the lives of the men to whom we minister.

What has impacted you while working at Breakthrough?
I have learned to trust in God's provision on a deeper level. He has provided for Breakthrough financially and through leadership, and His miracles have directly affected our guests so often. Working at Breakthrough has offered me an opportunity to yield to God and trust in His provision for the ministry, and my family, when there were fewer financial resources for the staff.

What would you tell others about your decision to support Breakthrough financially?
Over the years, I have cried, laughed, and prayed with the men who come here. I've seen many hearts and lives changed first hand. My husband and I prayed about how we should support the ministry financially. We both believe in Breakthrough's mission.

Describe how you used your husband's employer to match your gift to Breakthrough?
My husband, Vince works for a subsidiary company of Illinois Tool Works. Vince found out from the company that they have a 3 to 1 match for contributions made to charitable organizations. Whatever we give, they will match three times the amount. It helped us in our decision to step out in faith and contribute more, as we are able, to the capital campaign.
