The Breakthrough Difference: Staff Create A Welcoming Place For Guests
At the end of a long day, most of us look forward to coming home, including the guests in Breakthrough's Men's Services Program. Some men work at jobs around the city. Others look for work, going on interviews and spending time improving their skills. For men who are homeless, days can be long. "My feet get tired," says one man. "I spend a lot of time trying to find somewhere warm to duck in out of the cold."

When evening comes, Breakthrough staff does their best to create a nice place for guests to spend the end of their day. "We get here an hour early to prepare the space," says Overnight Coordinator, Eddie Sturgis. "We make sure the center is clean," he says, "and that there are fresh towels and bed linens. If the evening meal hasn't been prepared, then we warm the food and get things ready for dinner."

Small details make a big difference.
"Basically, we treat people how we'd like to be treated," say Eddie. "Since the guys pre-register during the day, they don't have to stand in a long line to get in." says Eddie. "We have a pot of hot coffee ready, and maybe a little something to snack on. During bad weather, we open up a little early."

After a hot, nutritious, meal guests relax and spend their evening catching up with the other guys, reading the paper or watching movies. Staff members also offer a devotional time for those who wish to participate. "A lot of guys work during the day and have to leave early in the morning, so they like to eat and then go right to bed," says Eddie.

He and the other staff look forward to moving into the Breakthrough Ministry Center. "We've been blessed to stay at First Free, but it will be nice to have our own space," Eddie says. "The guys will have real beds instead of mats on the floor. There will be a lot more room, more showers, more bathrooms and more privacy." He adds, "The new building will allow us to provide an even better place for guys to come home to."

Why do you volunteer? And why at Breakthrough?

I believe it is imperative that the church has an object of love and service beyond itself to keep from falling into the trap of "self introspection and concern" that so many Christians fall into. Also, I think we learn more about who we are in Christ and each other in the process of serving...more so than in any other exercise.

I volunteer at Breakthrough because I believe in the mission and ministry. Breakthrough is much more than a homeless shelter and they treat people with great dignity and respect.

How do I know? I like to spend time talking to the men during dinner. I learn a lot. One thing I keep hearing is that Breakthrough has a certain reputation among men who are homeless. One guy actually told me, "Homeless folks are afraid of Breakthrough." He went on to explain that Breakthrough exists for those homeless people who want to do something about their situation. He said, "You will have a breakthrough when you come here."

More Than Just A Place To Sleep...

Last month during our staff meeting I asked the staff to imagine what our homeless guests in crisis must be feeling when they enter our shelters. They were quick to list such things as fear, anxiety, vulnerability, and low self-esteem. We talked about the responsibility we have as staff as we interact with people who have been yelled at, disrespected and ignored.

Several years ago when I took on the guise of a homeless woman and stayed in a shelter and ate at soup kitchens for four days, I felt almost childish and powerless as I interacted with staff. I was told where to sleep and when to be quiet. I slept with thirty homeless women who snored, cried, coughed and talked through the night in their sleep. I looked to the staff of the shelter to be my protectors and care givers.

Our night staff workers are with people during some of the most vunerable moments of their lives. I remember when my children were young, as I tucked them into bed at night, we would review their day and I would listen to their stories and pray with them. The evening and twilight moments with our homeless guests are precious.

As you get ready for bed tonight and rise in the morning, or as you tuck your own children into bed, please pray for the sixty homeless guests who stay with us, that they would find refuge, peace and new life while they live at Breakthrough.

Thank you to Chris DiNaso and Westbrook Christian Church. Once a month, the group travels an hour and a half from Bolingbrook to serve meals to guests in Breakthrough's Men's Services Program. Because of the long distance, they usually prepare the meals ahead of time and warm them up once they arrive. "It's been a great experience," says DiNaso. "I also encourage our volunteers to take Breakthrough's Behind The Scenes Tour so they can get a good grasp of the ministry and the philosophy behind it."
