Melvin Enjoys His New Apartment And Looks Ahead.

After several years without a home, Melvin finally moved into his own place last week. “It brings back old memories,” he says. “I’ve gotten used to sharing space with others in shelters. It can be challenging sometimes with all the different personalities.”

Melvin has been on a waiting list since June for a spot in permanent housing, which he was able to access through Breakthrough Urban Ministries. Melvin is thankful that he was able to stay at Breakthrough during a few periods of his life. “I stayed a couple of months that first time. Then I moved on when I got a job,” he says. “But after three years, I lost that job.”

He was experiencing severe health problems, and it was during his second stay at Breakthrough that Melvin spent time in the hospital. He has now applied for disability. “It was a tough decision for me to make,” he says. “I’ve worked for 35 years, so a lot of emotion came up when the doctors advised me not to return to work. I like working, and I’m independent.”

Melvin is very self-motivated, and he has received a lot of encouragement at Breakthrough. “He has a number of health challenges now that now prevent him from being in the exact place he'd like to be, but he has a great perspective,” says Housing Coordinator, Paul Luikart. “Despite his health setbacks, Melvin has made incredible progress on his goals, and he knows that God will sustain him.”

Right now, Melvin savors his new freedom. “I can get up and take a walk outside when I want to. It’s nice to be able to set my own rules and regulations,” he says. “I know those are simple things, but they mean a lot when you’re not used to having them.”

Although he’s not sure what the future holds, Melvin is optimistic. “Maybe someday I’ll go back to school, I don’t know,” he says. “My grandmother used to teach our family about the words, ‘I can’t.’ She wrote the words on a piece of paper and buried it in the back yard. She said that we should never let those words stop us. I want that for myself, and I want that for others.

Keith Johnson lives in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. He is a board member and volunteers in many capacities, including Street Outreach.
Board member and volunteer, Keith Johnson, will speak at the upcoming Annual Benefit.

Why should people come to the Annual Benefit?
Breakthrough wants to brag about what God has done and celebrate that with everyone. We think people will be inspired and encouraged, whether it carries over into their involvement with Breakthrough or elsewhere in their lives.

How has volunteering impacted your life?
God has transformed me. I’ve found that when I open my heart and really watch Him work, I learn more about Him, I learn more about myself, I am encouraged, and I grow in my faith. It never gets old. As an example, I’ve made the transition between, “I’m helping this person because I am a Breakthrough volunteer,” to “I love this person dearly, and I want to be a part of his/her life and see God at work.”

What have you learned?
God does the transformation work, and He sometimes does it in ways that seem foreign to me. In other words, His ways are not always found within the four steps of my Sunday school lesson. If I just stick to truths in the latest commentary, I’ll miss out on some of the wonderful things He does in the lives of others.

What would you say to people who are hesitating to get involved as a volunteer or donor?
Don’t be afraid! I’ve been at that point where I sense God is tugging at my heart. It can be scary, but you can trust God. Even if you don’t know exactly what you want to do or how to help…just try it and see what God does. I’ve been involved with Breakthrough for a long time, and I’m still excited about this ministry…even more than the first day. I have grown by God allowing me to be a part of His work here!

For One Chicago volunteers
For One Chicago volunteers worked at the Men's Services site on the north side (pictured). Other volunteers worked on the west side.
Special thanks to volunteers from For One Chicago who collectively put in about 180 hours of work between our north side and west side locations last month. About 30 volunteers worked at our Men’s Services location. They scraped paint, painted, deep cleaned and sorted donated clothing. Another 15 volunteers worked at our Women’s Services location. They worked on various maintenance projects and washed and cleaned the outreach RV.

Staying The Course
I participated in the Chicago marathon on October 7th. If you haven’t heard, it was a scorching hot day with temps in the high eighties. The marathon planners didn’t adequately anticipate the need for water and called the race after three and a half hours because people were passing out from the heat. I managed to finish the entire 26.2 mile course, but it was difficult.

In the aftermath of what some are calling the “marathon meltdown” it was interesting to hear what runners had to say who were not allowed to finish, or who started out with a finish time in mind and ended up with much slower times. All of us want to finish well, to be proud of our effort and to know that we have done our best, no matter how difficult the journey.

One of our men’s shelter night staff members described his endurance in our cramped men’s facility while waiting for the completion of our Breakthrough Ministry Center building as his marathon. The journey has been difficult and has taken longer than expected. We are all learning to stay the course despite the setbacks and make every effort to get to the finish line. With the opening of the shelter scheduled for January, we are on our way. The finish line is in sight. Thanks for your encouragement and support during this race.
